Week of 2/11

We have a student teacher from ODU working with our class: Mrs. Stacey Tingen. She's done a great job so far and the kids have enjoyed having her with us. She will be in our class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until the end of February.

Mrs. Tingen worked with a group of students
to create lanterns for Chinese New Year.

Language Arts:
This week's story: Our Family Get Together
Strategy: Questioning
Skill: Main Idea

Phonics: Short vs. long o (i.e.
hop vs. hope)
Writing: "Super-size" sentences

Math:

We will be taking another look at numbers up to 100 (S.O.L 1.1). Thursday is the 100th day of school, so we will be doing some "Hundredth Day" activities. Please continue to practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. The children do not need to bring anything from home. =)

Social Studies:

We'll be starting our unit on Famous Americans and Presidents Day (S.O.L. 1.2 and 1.3). Students will learn about Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver, Eleanor Roosevelt, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.

Important reminders/notes:
*2/12 - Math Fest at 6:00
*2/18 - Presidents' Day - No school
*2/20 - 1:00 dismissal
*2/22 - Jump Rope for Heart Night - 5:30 - 7:30
*The children will be exchanging valentines on Thursday; please have your child's valentines in by Wednesday in a bag with your child's name on it. We are not having a "party" - just a snack and valentine exchange. =)
*Keep collecting and sending in Boxtops - our class is doing a GREAT job!
