Week of 4/15

We're back into the swing of things and have started off the last quarter of the year on the right foot. On Friday, we had our Goal-Busters ice cream sundae party, then had conferences to set our AR goals for this quarter. Students are very excited to earn ice cream scoops again!

The children are all buzzing about Humphrey! I hope your family is enjoying the special reading time together. Remember, you can visit The Cardinal's Nest http://carrolltones.blogspot.com/ to hear mystery readers read each chapter!

Here's what's happening this week in our class:

Language Arts:
This week's story: Dinosaur Babies
Strategy: Determining importance
Skill: Main idea

Phonics: Vowel sounds of y (i.e. many/my), compound words

Writing: "Super-size" sentences

Math:

Students will continue to work with money (SOL 1.10). So far we have identified and compared and contrasted pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. We've also learned how to name equivalent amounts, like how many pennies are in a quarter, other ways to make ten cents, etc. This week we will focus counting money.

Social Studies:

We've started studying maps (SOL 1.4), and this week our focus will be parts of a map and creating our own maps.

Important notes/reminders:
  • Report card come home tomorrow (Monday). You can keep the report card at home, just sign and return the white envelope.
