Week of 5/20

I am so excited for a normal (mostly) week!

Here's what we'll  be working on this week:

Language Arts:
This week's story: Fox on Stage
Strategy: Predicting
Skill: Plot

Phonics: -ow, medial consonants

Writing: details in writing

Math:

We'll be wrapping up our graphing unit and move on to magnitude (SOL 1.4). Students will be learning about reasonable estimates - i.e. are there 5, 50, or 500 blocks in the jar? Students usually grasp this very quickly, so it's just a couple of days for the unit. Then we'll briefly review skip-counting and move on to reviewing word problems. Please continue working on mastering basic addition and subtraction facts with flash cards and/or the online practice sites listed in the Resources section of our blog.

Science/Social Studies:

We've been working on matter (SOL 1. 3). Students have learned about solids, liquids, and gases, and will be learning more about how these things interact with water (sink, float, dissolve, mix). We'll be busy scientists this week exploring all of these things! After we finish the matter unit, we'll learn about Memorial Day, then we'll begin our animals unit just in time for the field trip to the zoo on June 6th!

Important notes/reminders:
*All library books are due back on 5/31 and AR ends on June 7th!!
*Field trip permission slips and money are due on Wed. 5/29
*Pictures are due back if you do not plan on ordering them.
*We are in need of Treasure Box items - if anyone would like to donate anything, I know some Firsties who would greatly appreciate it!
